Sainte Catherine is a very a special saint celebrated on the 25th of November. The “catherinettes” were women who were not married after 25. Following tradition, people sent postcards (generally to young women under 25 as a kind of “good luck to find a husband” wish), they gave a little money. There was also a tradition to design very extravagant hats.
An interesting topic for gender history! Many things to say about that but this is not the place.
